A Decent Run

Another update today, mainly because today was one of my better runs since my youth, and now, this afternoon, I am too knackered to do much else than sit down.  So doing a little update makes sense...  I mentioned before that I am following a power-based training plan.  I have never followed a training plan before and certainly not power-based!  The reason for this is mainly because I knew I had to primarily run on a gym treadmill, rather than outdoors, which is what I would have done prior to the accident.  I also like to track my runs/swims/cycles on my Garmin watch, which of course, does an outstanding job of that!  Garmin watches and the Garmin Connect infrastructure are brilliant!  However, on a treadmill it is difficult for a watch to accurately measure your pace and distance.  It does a decent job but I don't really trust it.  My sister, Veebs, in France, had made it clear to me that I was still in considerable post-accident danger for...

Ten Days Later...

The idea of this blog was to note something down every day or two or three or four... It has, of course, been ten days, because I never get round to anything!  But I will try and leave more regular updates...  The last ten days have been interesting for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, following the Steve Palladino Marathon Training Plan has been very hard but very worthwhile.  Secondly, there is an update on something that was put in place before this blog started.  About three weeks ago I was up in Glasgow and talking to my sister Jo about my marathon plans.  Both my medical sisters are worried that, given my injury, I should be careful about overdoing it.  And marathon plans can lead to that, so it's not a bad idea to have that in mind for sure!   Jo mentioned an old friend of hers who is an ex-international athlete and who specialises in running and aging and is heavily involved in research.  I thought it would be great to have a chat ...

Why This Blog?

After my serious bicycle accident at the end of March 2020, I have retired and want to get my fitness back.  Triathlon was my main sporting fun prior to the TBI (yes, it's apparently officially called a Traumatic Brain Injury...), but concentrating on cycling after the accident didn't sound so appealing.  I've always been a totally rubbish swimmer, so the clear favourite new focus was running.  I used to be ok at running when I was younger, doing several half marathons in my late teens and even one marathon in 1999.  I was never quick, but I got close to 1:30 for the half and did 3:47 for the marathon.  Not awful, but a long time ago. When I started trying to run again after not really being able to walk properly post-accident, I switched from typically running outdoors to mainly running on gym treadmills.  This was purely for safety as I absolutely didn't want to fall over or be tripped up or whatever.  I started in the second half of 2020 with 1km ma...
