Calf Still A Problem???
Easy day today (well, not today, but yesterday, because I am writing this post the next day... ๐). After yesterday’s (well, Tuesday's) trickier one, I thought my right calf would be fine! Calf was fine the day before after all, so no worries at all! My standard speed on the mill for easy runs is 11.3kmh, but due to still being in post-calf-pain recovery I started at a mere 10.7kmh which was my standard a while ago... Bear in mind these are treadmill paces, not the real pace which is typically a bit slower! The easy runs to date have been 50m in time duration but today it was 55m – the training plan slowly ups the length of time for the easy runs which I think is valuable. And I had no worries as yesterday's run was 25m longer and included fartlek and intervals, so today should have been fine. However, after about 20m I could start feeling the calf a tiny bit. But it could be nothing, so I carried on, but the slight pain didn’t subside and perhaps got slightly more acute. Still felt not that bad and I wouldn’t have worried, but it was my right calf, and so I had to be careful. After about 26m I slowed down to 10kmh and that seemed to do the trick. I thought maybe the pain had been nothing, but I stuck to 10kmh for a while with no pain. I was happy! After 40m, with 15m to go, I thought I should very slowly and gently increase the pace. It was still very slow after all! So, after 40m I went to 10.2kmh, then after another 5m I went to 10.4kmh and then finally, after another 5m, with 5m left, I went to 10.6kmh. It still all felt fine! Great! The pace of the whole run was very slow at an average of 6:00m/km, but interestingly the treadmill said my average pace was 5:45m/km!! But I obviously believe the Stryd foot-pod and it certainly felt like a very slow run! Anyway, as I mentioned, all felt good, but getting changed and showering and then the walk home was not pain free! It wasn’t so bad, but, especially on the walk home, I could certainly feel it! I think a little more calf rest is required but I think it must be quite close to being fully better! The training plan for today (that is, the day after the slightly problematic run that is the subject of this post) was for another fartlek/interval session. After the very slight calf niggle yesterday I had decided to definitely not risk a run today and the plan was to probably so a Wattbike session in the gym. But the weather was great so I went for a walk of two and a half hours instead. Sometimes not being able to run is a bonus ๐
