Calf Injury
I wasn't going to post anything today, as nothing unusual planned. The run in the training plan was for 80m with a bit of fartlek and a few intervals. Nothing too intimidating, and nothing vastly different to what I had been doing for the last few weeks. So, in theory, nothing much to write about! But I will mention one thing. I think I said earlier in the blog that I had never run with a training plan or power before, but that is not completely true. I had never done anything like this before getting Stryd, but this marathon plan is actually my second training plan attempt. At the start of last year I started the Steve Palladino half-marathon plan, which is obviously power-based too. But I didn't mention this earlier because after a few weeks of training I had to suddenly stop running and walk home due to quite a severe pain in my right calf :-(. That injury took weeks to heal, maybe 6 weeks or so, and only started healing when I started doing calf exercises recommended by Brett, the awesome physio I mentioned before. I had tried to keep doing these exercises for prevention rather than cure, but I kept forgetting them for days or weeks at a time. I coincidentally did them yesterday, and I do them every now and again, but it didn't prevent the pain returning today. The planned run was 80m with a bit of fartlek (four eight second sprints) and a few intervals (five medium-fast pace runs of five and a half minutes each). And the plan, as is typical, started and ended with some easy running (ten minutes at the start and seventeen and a half minutes at the end). This was fine, although before the start I had a slight concern. When I got up this morning I had slight calf pain in both my calves. That's very unusual, and due to the calf problem last year was certainly a worry. But I figured that after my walk to the gym and starting the run on the treadmill it would feel fine. And it did feel fine! Right up until 10m to go of the 80m session! And that 10m was in the 17:30m easy running at the end! I had done the fartlek and intervals with no calf pain, and then with ten minutes to go, my right calf hurt! I was gutted! Same calf as last year when I had that problem. And last year it knocked me out for ages! What a pain! But the pain was nowhere near as bad as last year, and with 10m to go I slowed down on the treadmill from 11.3kmh to 10.7kmh, but still a bit of pain, so down to 6kmh which is walking! I finished the 80m session at an average pace of 5:14m/km which is quite quick for me, and all sections were within the power targets of the plan. But I had to sit down afterwards as my calf, although not agony, was certainly hurting! I don't know how this is going to affect my training and the April marathon, but my fingers are crossed and we'll see.... At least blister plasters seem to be very effective on the blister I picked up a few days ago!
