Is Calf Better?

My last post was written after an eighty minute run that ended up with some calf pain for the last few minutes.  That was six days ago, and I haven't run since.  The calf pain was there for a few days, but not too bad, and seemed to have got better in the last couple of days.  I considered running on Monday but felt I should l leave it resting a little longer.  Today in the plan was a very slow, easy forty-five minute run, and that seemed to be a perfect run to see how the calf felt under exercise.  Also, yesterday evening I bought a calf compression sock that feels good, so I wore that while running.  What could go wrong with all this preparation!  I started at my usual 11.3kmh on the mill (that's the mill speed - the real speed is much less!!).  It felt ok for two or three minutes and I thought the few days rest had done the job!  But no...  After those few minutes the calf pain was certainly starting and building up, so I slowed right down to 10kmh.  That felt ok, so I kept going until 10 minutes had passed in total and I upped it to 10.2kmh.  Still very slow, but I thought I would see how it felt just upping by maybe 0.1kmh every five minutes or so.  After a total of 15 minutes it didn't feel bad, but I could feel it, so I didn't up the pace and kept it at 10.2kmh.  I wanted to see how long I could keep that pace with little or no calf pain.  It turned out that after another three minutes or so it was definitely starting to hurt more.  I could slow down again but I thought the safest thing was to simply stop.  It is what I should have done last Thursday at the first sign of calf pain, rather than making sure I finished the plan by slowly running the last 10 minutes.  Maybe if I had stopped immediately it would be fine now!  The other thing that concerns me is that, given this is my second calf injury in a year, why am I getting them!!!  I though I understood why it happened last year.  I had started running faster a little faster and was naturally moving back to front-footed running.  This meant that a calf problem was not unlikely.  But this year I have been trying to be aware of that and not do anything that may cause it.  I wonder if the the fartlek sprints or fast intervals are causing it.  Or is it just the amount of running I am doing!  Last month was loads of running for me, and the last time I did that kind of distance in a month was last March.  My first calf injury was the beginning of last April.  Coincidentally very similar to my current situation.  Hmmmm.  I need to figure it out because if it knocks me out for a few weeks every few months, it will cripple my marathon training!  And I kinda need to do the miles!  My birthday in ten days with small trips up North and down South planned.  I was going to do these trips on Saturday afternoons after my long runs, but I am now thinking I might not run until after my birthday!  A good excuse!! :-)
